Dare To Be Aware

Self awareness is a superpower to living a life on purpose. In the times we’re living in, it’s very easy to not be self aware. It’s easy to turn a blind eye to what’s happening in our world today. It’s easy to stay silent. It’s easy to live our lives…

What’s In Your Hands?

Growing up, one of my favorite TV shows was MacGyver. All the 80s kids know exactly what I’m talking about. MacGyver was known for taking very little and making it into something incredible. …

Give Your Power Away.

I believe at the heart of any person truly living on purpose, is the heart to give power away. — Everyone knows of the movie company, Pixar. The brilliant creators of Toy Story, Wall-E, Finding Nemo, and so many others. But do you know how Pixar became the storytelling franchise that it is today? Pixar started as a technology company, but was bought by Apple. Steve Jobs used his gift…

Sovereign Themes

Let’s get practical. Over the last few weeks, we’ve been talking about themes of an authentic leader. Our final topic is called “sovereign themes.” These are the things in your life that are recurring. Places and spaces that you always find yourself in. Maybe during group projects, you’re always chosen…

Commit To Your Calling

We have a lust problem in today’s culture. Our potential leaders are often the most at fault for it. We constantly lust after someone else’s skillset or calling, wishing we could be like someone else instead of understanding and accepting our own calling. It’s time to stop having affairs with…

Accepting Limitations

“I’m me, so who you? You’re not me, you’re not me” — Weezy. We were taught to have no limits. We were taught we were equal in skill. But the truth is, we are not all the same. You have different gifts and talents than I do. We both have limitations on what we can and cannot do. As a 6 foot 6 black man, I could never be a good horse jockey. I’ve accepted that. Similarly, although I know I was gifted in basketball and played professionally, Michael Jordan and Lebron James are more skilled than I am. I could not spend my whole life trying to be like them. We were built differently. Accepting limitations is difficult, but it is a beautiful thing. To accept our limits is to set us free to do what we are fully capable of.

Audit Your Skills

The world is in need of authentic leaders. We define authenticity as self-awareness with the resilience to remain self-aware. An authentic leader can do both of these things as well as advance the mission. Their corporate mission, organizational mission, purpose, family mission, etc. To do this, one of the first…

Make America Great

They say tomorrow is the most important election in history. Although that has been said about every election I’ve participated in since I turned 18, I do believe we have a civic duty to exercise wisdom and our right to vote responsibly tomorrow as we consider presidential candidates as well…

Mask Off: Unlocking Authenticity in an Age of Imposters

CHAPTER 1 OLD RULES “Shout out to old dudes and old rules.” -Jay Z Let’s take it back to the Industrial Age. By the first half of the 19th Century, the Industrial Age was basically over, and its crowning development was mass production. We could now supply a large number…

Food for Thought

What you FOCUS on grows. 2. We’ve heard it said, “practice makes perfect”, so what are you practicing? 3. You’re “why” determines your “what”. You may know “what” you’re doing, but do you know “why” you’re doing it? For more on New Rules and what we stand for, read our…
